Kyle had a work conference to attend in the Big Easy. I had a birthday and the excuse of never having been before, and tagged along with him. We flew down on Saturday afternoon, and enjoyed a long weekend there before his conference started on Tuesday.

Happy hour on Bourbon Street was the first thing on our agenda |
Hello delicious margaritas TO GO! What a concept! |
On our first night there, we did a nighttime walking tour of the French Quarter, featuring ghost and vampire stories |
One of the more famous haunted locations in the quarter |
I can't remember the ghost story associated with this place, but I loved the architecture |
...and this dog that was randomly sleeping in a bar. He was the greatest. |
On Sunday, we signed up for an all-day excursion, featuring a tour of the swamp and a plantation.
Ready to see the swamp! |
The things we do to impress the kids... |
Uh oh. A slight downpour happened just as the tour was supposed to begin... |
Swamp selfie (after a slight rain delay) |
This is a real bayou cemetary. Kind of creepy. |
That's not a stick... |
...neither is that. |
Hello there. |
The only thing that would cause me to jump off the boat and in with the alligators is the presence of a snake on board...especially a creepy albino one. Not cool! |
Little baby swamp raccoons. Awww! |
I was totally freaked out by the snake, but somehow ok with holding a baby alligator. |
I say again: the things we do to impress the kids. |
At Oak Alley Plantation (aptly named) |
They encourage touring with a mint julep. When in Rome... |

Those oaks! |
Monday was my birthday. I forced my husband to go shopping with me in the French Market.
At the famous French Market (my birthday, my rules) |
Beignets for my morning birthday snack. Happy birthday to me! |
Jackson Square |
After the French Market, we took a walk to the famous St Louis Cemetary |
Creepy |
Even creepier |
Less creepy - hi Kyle! |
The future burial site of Nicholas Cage. Aren't you glad you know that? |
Marie Laveau's tomb - she is famous for practicing voodoo, and is often referred to as the "Voodoo Priestess"
And finally, the highlight of my special day - a cocktail walking tour of the French Quarter. YES!!
Getting started with a hurricane, compliments of the tour company
Pimm's Cup @ Napoleon House
Antoine's was up next - the oldest family owned restaurant in the US
The green room is where the VIPs go - there is a whole lot of history here, and unfortunately all I can remember is that it was recently used by Brittany Spears. Sad.
At Antoine's, I tried the Sazerac...
This is an accurate depiction of my feelings on the Sazerac.
On to the happier skies of Two Sisters, where I went for the Bayou Bash - a delicious alternative to that horrifying Sazerac
The last stop on the tour, for very good reason...
That's absinthe she's brewing
We split a Green Fairy - a very wise decision based on those smiles on our faces...
On Tuesday, Kyle had to go to his conference, and I went in search of a Po'boy. I landed on the Breakfast Po'boy. There was not a crumb left on my plate and I don't regret a single thing about
It was a great time in NOLA!
