Playing with Penguins

The girls stayed overnight with Grandma Dee in Newaygo.  She surprised them by getting out her penguin-disguised bowling pins (which she is in the process of getting rid of, after discovering she had no use for 30 bowling pins dressed as penguins).  They may not be particularly practical, but they do make good snow buddies!

Toothless!

Megan has been waiting to lose her first tooth since shortly after her fifth birthday.  At her semi-annual dental check-up that July, her dentist mentioned that kids generally lose their first tooth between the ages of five and seven.  As she approached the ripe old age of 6-1/2, and is surrounded by many toothless first-graders, she was becoming quite concerned with her own mouth's failure to keep the pace.  Near the end of October, we got our first real wiggler.  By the third week of November, she was chasing me around the house wiggling it with her tongue and relishing the fact that it totally grossed me out (like seriously the WORST thing I've experienced as a parent thus far, and we have had some real doozies in our collective ten years of parenting these gals).  Finally, on Black Friday, the tooth had shifted for the last time, and she agreed to let me pull it.  We both prepared ourselves for what turned out to be a complete non-event.  The minute I touched the thing, it just popped out (please note that I am in no way complaining that it was not more involved).

O' Christmas Tree(s)

We spent Thanksgiving night and Black Friday getting our Christmas decorations out, starting with our various Christmas trees.  This year, for the first time ever, we got a fake tree (Megan had an allergic reaction to our real tree last year, which prompted the change...not to mention Mom hates pine needles all over the place).

She takes her role as Christmas Decorating Coordinator VERY seriously

Who says fake trees can't be as fun as real ones?

Hannah did her own tree this year, too - note all the bulbs hanging on the floor

Very proud of her efforts

Thanksgiving

I come to appreciate Thanksgiving more and more every year, as it is the holiday that (for us, at least) requires the least amount of prep work, is minimally celebrated and gives us a nice, relaxing stretch of time afterwards to enjoy as we see fit.

Megan's Thanksgiving art project.  Kid art makes me smile.
I got to join Hannah for a Thanksgiving feast at her school
Her definition of "feast" is eating two dinner rolls
I sprung her from school a couple of hours early, disguising her as a turkey to make our escape

Gymco's Parent Week

The girls have been working hard at their gymnastics classes since the beginning of September.  During parent week, we got a chance to go behind the scenes and see them in action.

Disclaimer:  we do love Megan very much, but she is in a refuses-to-be-photographed-most-of-the-time phase, so the bulk of the below is of Hannah.

Showing off her mad hula-hoop skills, which primarily involve being able to put the hoop over her head and watch it fall to the ground

A rare sighting of Miss Megan, swinging from the bar

Hannah and her beloved Miss Betsey working on flips

Ready to show us how she does it "by myself!"

Success!

Chalked hand challenge - the goal was to chalk your hands, mark the mat and see how high you'd jumped - she started off just slapping the mat in front of her, ignoring the jump part

Who loves chalked hands?  Hannah loves chalked hands.

Gymco builds strong muscles!...and big, round bellies?  (This photo won her the Gymco Parent Week photo contest, thankyouverymuch)

Hannah the Artist

Like Mom and Dad, Hannah is a lefty.  Unlike Mom and Dad, who use our left hands primarily just to write and hold eating utensils, Hannah appears to be a lefty through and through.  I foresee the purchase of strange left-handed scissors and sports equipment in our future.

Megan has always liked to color and do craft projects, but I do not remember the level of creativity at the age of three that Hannah, in all of her left-handedness, is displaying.  Recently, instead of her scribbling, she has started drawing houses, people, animals, and other objects.  This was the first time we saw her draw a "person".  I realize it looks more like a strange chicken from outer space, but let's keep in mind that she's three, people.

Shrek the Musical

Every year Grandma Dee treats me and the girls to a musical, put on by Grant's community theater.  For a small town, they always do a nice job, but this year, we were completely b.l.o.w.n. a.w.a.y. by their production of Shrek the Musical.  It was AWESOME.

The girls have been studying up on their Shrek prior to seeing the play, and they loved every minute of the production.  I just wanted to share a few pics from the experience.  Again, remember this was Grant - not exactly known as a hot spot for musical theater.

We were particularly entertained by the Gingerbread Man (who was really an 8 year old girl)
Lord Farquaad was absolutely hilarious

Megan's First Sleepover

Megan and her friend Brianna have been best buds since they were toddlers.  Though they don't go to the same elementary school, her Mom and I have become friends and make an effort to get the girls together every so often.

Though still kind of shocking that they're really this big, I can't think of anyone more appropriate for Megan's first sleepover guest.  They were total rockstars - they got along beautifully and had a blast.

Bri's Mom supplied the matching PJs

These party animals chose to spend some of their way-past-bedtime adventures reading books to themselves

Hey pal - no boys allowed!

Sleepover success!!  (Kudos to Bri for being so brave about sleeping over at our house for the first time)

Mackinaw City (alternate title: why you should never head North after October)

Not all family vacation are meant to be a success.  I would definitely chalk our beginning of November jaunt to Mackinaw City as one of those failures.  We made a last minute decision to head north for the weekend, booking a hotel with an indoor waterpark in Mackinaw City on Saturday night, and hoping to get over to the island on Sunday morning.  I did some research ahead of time, noting the weather forecast was favorable (liars), and though a lot of shops were closed for the season, there was still enough to do and the ferries were in service.

Let me tell you where I went wrong:

  • It is not warm there, not even a little bit
  • Nothing is open after mid-October, not even for a little while
  • It is cold there, and often snows
  • The ferries do not run from Mackinaw City after October 31, not even a little bit - instead, you have to cross the bridge and catch a ride to the island from St. Ignace
  • It is not warm
  •
Our family roadtrip came just a couple of days after Hannah & Grandma's car accident, so, if nothing else, a full uninterrupted weekend with the girls was much appreciated.  We headed north Saturday morning.  It was an uneventful trip, though the sight of snow near Kalkaska was alarming.  We settled into the hotel and enjoyed the waterpark and facilities.  The weather was HORRIBLE, so venturing out was not appealing.  We did go out for a pizza dinner (one of the only open restaurants around) but immediately returned to the warmth of our hotel room.

Waterpark fun (fun fact: waterparks steam camera lenses)

All the best pool hustlers wear footed pajamas

Hannah has a slight advantage at air hockey
The next morning did not bring the break in weather that I was counting on, and the wind was howling.  Not only did we not want to take a ferry across the choppy waters, we didn't even want to drive over the bridge in those conditions.  Instead we cut our losses and headed home after breakfast and a quick trip to the waterpark.  We attempted to stop off in Gaylord for a quick adventure at a rumored-to-be-awesome playground there, but the weather was actually WORSE as we headed south.  Go figure.

Not my brightest idea for an adventure.  Lesson learned:  if feeling the need for a late fall escape, head SOUTH.  Until next time, Mackinaw.

Grandma & Hannah's Bad Day

Before proceeding, please note that EVERYONE IS OK!  But you know that phone call that you never want to get?  The one that starts with "there's been an accident".  This story begins with that phone call.  Thankfully it has a happy ending, but I still hope that it is the one and only time in our lives we get a call like that.

Once upon a Grandma Day, Grandma Joan and Hannah ventured over to Sam's Club for Grandma to do some shopping and Hannah to do some food sampling.  I happened to be at Megan's school over my lunch hour to volunteer during her library time.  Megan had been suffering with a cold all week, and was looking kind of pale and worn down when I saw her.  I called Grandma, who was on her way home from Sam's with Hannah, and let her know that I'd be bringing Megan home from school after the library.  I tucked my phone back in my coat pocket and went to continue helping the first graders select their books.  A few minutes later, Megan brought me my phone and said Grandma was calling.  I figured she'd leave a voicemail and told Megan to put it back in my coat.  Just a few minutes after that, she brought me the phone again to let me know Daddy was calling.  Library was almost over, so I once again declined the call.  In the next few minutes, I received several more phone calls and texts, which I didn't see right away, but it was quite alarming when I checked my phone as I was leaving the library.  I talked to Grandma, who immediately let me know everyone was ok, but that the accident was pretty bad, with ambulances and lots of emergency vehicles involved.  Hannah was reportedly unharmed but "in shock".  I was pretty shaken as we were getting Megan's things out of her locker, and when she asked me what was wrong, I couldn't help but burst into tears, which unfortunately made her burst into tears as well.  (Sidebar:  how the timing worked out so that BOTH of our girls had to be involved in this accident is beyond me - it was certainly not very lucky).

As we drove to the scene, just a mile or so from our house and school, I tried to explain to Megan that everyone was OK, but that we would see a lot of cars with flashing lights there.  I was not really prepared for just how MANY cars there would be - there was an ambulance, a firetruck and three police vehicles, in addition to witnesses, the cars involved (three), and tow trucks.  I got no comfort from pulling up to the scene.  Also, as we arrived, the EMTs were putting a woman on a stretcher into the back of the ambulance, and both Megan and I were pretty sure it was Grandma Joan.  Thankfully (so thankfully!!) that was not the case.  It was the driver of the third vehicle.  We found Grandma and Hannah sitting up in the same ambulance, but looking in much better shape than that poor woman (who was not wearing a seatbelt - not kidding.  WHO DOES THAT???).  Grandma was obviously shaken and Hannah was pale as a ghost and quiet a mouse, but it was pretty evident that she was unharmed.  While I was talking to the EMT about Hannah, Megan was unfortunately stuck next to me in the ambulance (they wouldn't let us out, deeming it safer to be inside) watching the woman on the stretcher, with a very clear and nasty head injury.  I would give anything for her to un-see that, but fortunately Daddy arrived just a few minutes later to get her out of there.  I all but tossed her out of the back of the rig before anything traumatic happened to the woman.

The scene.  This was only about half of the vehicles that responded.

I was able to take the girls home after we escaped the ambulance - the EMT thought it would be more traumatizing to subject Hannah to a trip to the hospital, since her car seat seemed to do its job perfectly and she had no signs of head trauma (being Hannah's parents, we are well versed in the obvious signs of head trauma).  By the time we pulled into the neighborhood, Hannah had already picked a fight with her big sister and requested a snack.  It was pretty obvious she was going to be fine.

Kyle took Grandma Joan to the hospital to be checked out, after they finished cleaning out her [completely totaled] car.  Her back took quite a beating (and several weeks to heal), but they didn't find any permanent damage.  If there was anything funny about this, it was the fact that Grandma's car was full of goods from Sam's Club.  And while Grandma doesn't appreciate the fact that her hefty Sam's grocery bill was demolished in a car accident, the end result was olives all over the scene and a car that smelled like pickle juice.  Not my typical idea of humor, but there's always a silver lining right?  I was not thinking clearly while running to the ambulance with Megan, but the one thing I do remember is that I stepped on an olive, and for one split second I thought to myself "was that an olive???"  Yes, it was, and it was Grandma's.

The car.  Hannah was sitting in the rear seat on the driver's side.  I cringe to see how close the mangled trunk (formerly full of pickles and olives) was to her.

The other side of the car (i.e. Megan's side - more what-if's to cringe about).  The car was struck initially here.  It then spun (the police report indicated that at one point it was airborne - also cringeworthy) and hit the third car, which was responsible for the damage in the picture above.
Grandpa Purdy met them at the hospital, and they later returned to our house to pick up her things.  I think it was good therapy for everyone to see Hannah, and how absolutely unphased she was by the accident.  Grandma had no fault whatsoever in this (they were struck by a driver who ran a red light), but I'm sure she felt guilty about hauling our baby around with such crazy drivers in the world.  Grandma, it could have happened to any one of us - we are just so thankful everyone was ok!

This picture of Hannah was taken about an hour after the crash.  She doesn't look too traumatized to you, does she?

Megan seemed to have a harder time on the night of the accident.  We stayed pretty close and cuddled up as a family that night, and I'd randomly look over and see her eyes filled with tears.  She wasn't really able to articulate her concerns, especially since everyone WAS ok - think about it, this is kind of big stuff for a first grader.  She just knew she was upset.  Finally, she settled on her biggest concern being whether or not Grandma & Grandma had enough money to buy a new car.  It was cute, and sweet, and heartbreaking at the same time.  I tried (and failed) to explain the concept of insurance to her, but that's not an easy one to get through to a six year old.  She was in much better shape after a good night's sleep, and we haven't heard her say anything about it since then.

For the first few weeks, Hannah didn't really have much to say about it either.  She had a tiny red bump on her forehead that disappeared quickly, and some bruising from her car seat straps that lingered for awhile, but didn't seem to bother her.  She never had any issues when we put her in her car seat, or when we drove through that intersection (which we pass almost daily).  A couple of weeks after the accident, when Grandma and Grandpa stopped by our house on their return trip from Florida, Hannah surprised us when she said goodbye by giving Grandma a big hug and saying "don't get in a car accident".  A while after they had left, she said to me "I hope Grandma didn't get in an accident", but she didn't seem upset or too worried about it - it was just sort of mentioned in passing.  Just a few weeks ago, as we drove through the intersection, she quietly said "I remember my accident with Grandma.  I remember it."  I asked her what she remembered, but she didn't really elaborate.  It's still on her mind but doesn't seem to be too upsetting.  Have I mentioned how thankful we are?

The next day, we celebrated NOT getting into a car accident by going to Spoonlickers...

...and with a movie night.

Megan the Author

While reading was a big focus of kindergarten, writing is the big thing in first grade.  We have enjoyed finding stories that Megan writes in her various notebooks around the house.  Mom especially will enjoy it when they get to the phonetic spelling portion of their curriculum, but she's improved enough that we can translate most of the content.  :)

Translation: "Once upon a time I went to the ice cream parlor with my sister. My sister was named Hannah and my name was megan and I know the Alphabet - [insert random recitation of the alphabet here]. And we went to the park and I did the slide and my sister did the slide too. The slide was so big and we loved it so much so we did it again an again. It was so fun. The End"

Future Cheerleader (alternate title: Mom's Worst Nightmare)

Megan got wind of a Junior Pom Clinic happening in our school district, and much to my Cheerleading-is-not-a-sport horror, she insisted on attending.  To make it worse, she was super excited about it.

Everyone got a tshirt at the clinic.  It remains her fave to this day.  Argh.
